High Street Planning Permission changes come into effect

Added on May 30, 2013

From Thursday 30th May 2013, Commercial planning laws as we know them, have changed. The changes allow property developers to turn office buildings into residential premises without the need to seek planning permission.

Such changes to current planning permission practices are believed to not only make better use of vacant office spaces, but also provide an economic boost to the UK market. are well positioned to advise on how changes to planning laws will affect your property.

What do these changes mean for businesses and house hunters?

  • Ministers believe that the changes will considerably cut red tape, meaning the decision making process which tends to hold up development is significantly quicker, as well as promoting enterprise and innovation throughout British businesses and developments.
  • Affordable housing could be obtainable for house hunters up until 2016, as relaxed rules will mean developers can turn abandoned offices into residential property.
  • A two year freeze will also be introduced on planning applications for a temporary change of High Street stores (hairdressers, restaurants, shops, bars, cafes, libraries, cinemas, post offices and takeaways). This freeze will allow short-notice stores to pop up (not exceeding 150 sq m in size) and trade for a limited period; although such businesses will need to inform councils of the intended use of the building and how long the building will be in use for.
